Kenai Peninsula Independent Homeschoolers

North Star Independent Homeschoolers now has a sister group in Kenai!

The bulk of communication will occur through their Facebook page located at https://www.facebook.com/groups/kpindyschoolers/. This group is exclusively for independently homeschooling (also known as private homeschooling) Alaskan families, on the Kenai Peninsula, and independent homeschooling “alumni”. Families in our group homeschool independently, meaning that the parents fully finance and oversee their family homeschool and do not participate in any government funded or supported homeschool programs such as IDEA, Connections, etc. Membership requests are looked at about once a week so please be patient. You may also receive a message to verify your identity if no one already in the group personally knows you, this is done to keep out spammers. To speed up membership requests feel free to message a admin telling a little bit about yourself. If you know of any independently homeschooling parents on the Kenai Peninsula, please invite them to this group!  If you are not on Facebook but would like to join Kenai Peninsula Independent Homeschoolers, please email kpindyschoolers@gmail.com with “Kenai Peninsula” in the subject line!

In today’s volatile educational climate, both in state and out of state, it is refreshing to see families exercising their parental and legal rights to educate their children at home. We are so grateful and thankful for the various support groups throughout the state that are a refuge to homeschooling families and help to encourage, support, and motivate families to keep up the good fight!

  1. Hi there,
My family is in the early stages of contemplating a move to the Kenai Peninsula area, from Washington state. Just curious about the homeschool community- how active is it, are there co-ops or at least regular get-togethers, etc. I have 3 kids ages 9, 11, and 13.

Thank you so much in advance!

    1. Allyson,

Thank you for your interest in our Kenai Peninsula sister group! The Peninsula offers much for homeschooling families. There are open homeschool gym times at Nikiski and Kenai Rec Centers. There is, of course, this group, and another “everyone” group in Nikiski called Nikiski Homeschool Fellowship that meets first Thursday of the month. There are also some homeschool classes and other activities offered around the Peninsula also. If you would like more information about just what Kenai Peninsula Independent Homeschoolers does throughout the school year, please do not hesitate to email the sister group’s leader at kpindyschoolers (at) gmail (dot) com

      1. Hello,

My name is Isaac Sommers, and I am a former homeschooler. In 2011, I created an online debate service allowing debaters from all across the United States to compete against each other in an online debate tournament using topics from the two major homeschool debate leagues in the US, NCFCA and Stoa.

Today, this program, Ziggy Online Debate, has participants from all across the country, has hundreds of participants each year, and provides unique opportunities for homeschool debaters to compete and connect with each other. Debates are scheduled for once every week or every two weeks, and debaters can select judges who are parents, coaches, and alumni to judge their rounds—all at a very affordable cost ($20 per person, total, for the entire Spring semester).

I am not aware of the reach NCFCA and Stoa may or may not have in Puerto Rico, but I would love for Puerto Rican homeschool families to have this opportunity as well. You don’t have to be affiliated with NCFCA or Stoa to participate in Ziggy. We can provide cursory resources for getting started, as well as can suggest additional debate materials for purchase from other parties, and can suggest coaches as well.

If you or any homeschool families you know may be interested in this, please take a look at ziggyonlinedebate.com and feel free to reach out to me personally with any questions at ziggyonlinedebate@gmail.com. would love to help get this community connected with Ziggy.

        Sincerely,
        Isaac Sommers
